I now live in the city, but growing up, I lived in a town where the main highway was a two-lane highway. The airport was a forty-five-minute drive away. There was no internet or GPS; details with directions were important when you had to describe to someone else how to get from point A to point B.

I was used to giving directions with no street names and numbers because it was easier for someone to look at landmarks than street signs. Also, the street signs were often missing; we had to rely on other descriptors.

I remember a party that my family was invited to several blocks away; it was a big party with many in attendance. As the party on Saturday got closer, the family doctor of the town asked my neighbor for directions to get to the party; unfortunately, my neighbor was not much for giving clear directions; it went something like this:

Take the main road until you see the town sign and continue for half a mile until you see the large tree on the right; you cannot miss seeing the tree.
